Total Flea Control

Fleas are bloodsucking parasites that can carry diseases between pets and on to humans as well. No matter how you look at it, finding fleas on the family pet is bad news  for both your pet and your family. That’s why flea control has always been a priority for pet owners.

Thankfully there’s also good news for getting rid of a flea infestation. Now, Pet owners also can develop a Flea control program that does not rely on smelly chemical pesticides as in times past. That good news is Natural Flea Control.

The worldwide “green” revolution has brought a new awareness of how pet flea control can be accomplished without using harmful chemical pesticides that endanger pets, children and the environment. Yes, the ugly little bloodsuckers known as fleas are still around, but concerned manufacturers have worked hard to develop organic solutions to flea treatment. These flea control products are rapidly replacing hazardous chemical flea treatment.

Here’s what to look for in a flea control product :

1) Look for products containing varieties of Pyrethrin.

Pyrethrin is derived from the flowers of several kinds of chrysanthemums native to Europe. These flowers have been used for centuries for pet flea control ( cats and dogs ).

2) Find products that contain d-Limonene.

This is a citrus by-product that carries a mild odour like grapefruit. This is a flea treatment for dogs rather than for cats, who can’t tolerate citrus odours.

3) The third and most promising natural flea control is diatomaceous earth, or DE.

Pyrethrin and d-Limonene still must be used cautiously, but DE has shown little or no toxic side effects. Diatomaceous Earth is actually a type of fossilized algae that looks like chalk dust. The particles have sharp edges and slice into a flea’s wax-coated exoskeleton. This causes a flea to lose water and die.

How to apply DE ?

DE powder can be used safely on puppies and dogs, kittens and cats. Wear a mask while applying it, because who wants to breathe in chalky dust? Sprinkle it gently along your pet’s dry spine (in other words, don’t wash first!). Rub it in along the body down to the extremities, avoiding the eyes. Then put your pet outside for a while so the fleas jump off out there, not in your home.

Diatomaceous Earth Flea Control also can be sprinkled on carpets to kill flea eggs. Pay close attention to dark, damp places where fleas like to lay their eggs. Brush the powder into the carpet and leave it for about four days. Then vacuum up dust and dead fleas! Be sure to purchase the right kind of DE powder; don’t use what’s manufactured for swimming pools. Get the natural version available from natural-pet catalogs, garden supply centers and in some health food stores.

In addition to these new products, tried-and-true hygienic practices go a long way toward dog flea control and cat flea control. Well-groomed pets that are kept clean and properly nourished are much less likely to pick up flea infestations when they’re out and about. Likewise, keeping the pets’ environment as tidy as possible reduces the chances of fleas setting up inside the house.

Keep after the fleas and the fleas won’t keep after your pets – or you!
